Many theological and philosophical challenges surrounding the problem of God stem not from the weakness of the proofs for His existence, but rather from the incorrect formulation and distorted image of the Divine essence and agency. Therefore, the clarification and correct ontological formulation of this problem is a fundamental prerequisite for a valid entry into theology, in order to reveal the truth of Divine self-subsistence (Qayyumiyyah) by transcending the errors of anthropomorphism (Tashbih) and negation (Ta’til). This research, using a descriptive-analytical method and relying on library resources, systematically re-reads the philosophical works and views of Professor Motahari regarding the ontological foundations of the problem of God. The findings indicate that the correct formulation of the problem of God in Motahari’s thought rests on three pillars: 1) the ontological distinction of the Infinite between the Necessary Being (Wajib al-Wujud) and contingent beings; 2) the explanation of vertical agency and Divine self-subsistence in contrast to horizontal agencies; and 3) the harmony of intellect, primordial nature (Fitrah), and revelation. The research concludes that reforming the question of God is a methodological prerequisite to any proof, allowing theological proofs to be liberated from common misunderstandings.
