The issue of rationality has always been a concern of thinkers across various fields of human knowledge, and Muslim philosophers have examined it from ancient times to the present. In his discussion of the types of knowledge, Allameh Ja‘fari briefly refers to the issue of voluntary deprivation of rationality. The aim of this study is to reread and philosophically analyze this issue with reference to divine verses. Accordingly, data were collected using the library method, and a descriptive–analytical approach (inspired by Qur’anic verses) was employed to process the data. Based on the findings, rationality, in Ja‘fari’s view, is the conformity of the flow of thought to laws that have previously been established. Thus, a set of factors is identified as obstacles to voluntary rationality in human beings, preventing them from attaining inner self-cultivation, which constitutes human perfection. The results indicate that the fundamental condition for human responsibility is precisely voluntary rationality. Therefore, human beings are capable of actualizing their rationality voluntarily, or, alternatively, of depriving themselves—by choice—of voluntary rational knowledge.
